Cloud Drive Mapper for manufacturing and industrial

INDUSTRY

Manufacturing operations run on a specific software layer: engineering CAD, PLM, quality-management systems, MES/MOM adjacencies, ERP back-offices, and the general Microsoft 365 estate that has to reliably serve engineering offices, shop-floor workstations, quality labs, multi-plant sites and (in most cases) a Citrix or Azure Virtual Desktop layer for shared endpoints. Cloud Drive Mapper brings real-time Microsoft 365 file access to that whole environment, without disrupting how engineers, production staff and quality teams work with files.

Full compatibility with the engineering software your plants run on

The software layer in a manufacturing business is a mix of ages and specialisms. Engineering CAD (AutoCAD, Bentley MicroStation, Vectorworks) alongside PLM systems, quality-management platforms, calibration and inspection tools, and the general Microsoft 365 layer everything else runs against. Migration to SharePoint Online has stalled in many manufacturers because the engineering and PLM applications simply do not understand cloud-file semantics.

Cloud Drive Mapper presents Microsoft 365 storage as virtual network drives with real file paths. Every engineering application that expects a Z: or an S: drive gets one. Drawings with external references, PLM-managed content with linked assemblies, quality documentation with exclusive-lock requirements, calibration data with batch exports: if it works with a Windows file server, it works with CDM. See AutoCAD and OneDrive: what breaks and how to fix it for the specifics on drawing dependencies.

02

Real-time access from engineering offices to shop-floor workstations

Engineering drawings change. Production procedures update. Quality documents get revised after a non-conformance. When an engineer approves a new drawing revision, the shop-floor workstations pulling that drawing for production, the quality bench referring to it during inspection, and the plant on the other continent building the same part all need to see the current revision, not last night's cached copy. Sync-based storage models do not give a deterministic answer to the "which revision is current" question at the moment when it matters.

Cloud Drive Mapper works in real time against Microsoft 365. A drawing revision uploaded from an engineering desk at 10am is the version a shop-floor PC opens at 10.02am, from any plant on any internet-connected device. No local mirror to reconcile, no propagation lag, no arguments over which drawing is the latest.

03

Multi-plant operations without a VPN concentrator per site

Multi-plant manufacturers have historically wired their sites into head office through per-site VPN tunnels, or a central VPN concentrator sized for the peak of concurrent site connections. That infrastructure is expensive to run, awkward to scale as plants open and close, and a constant source of the "the VPN dropped again" tickets that eat IT time and production time in equal measure.

Cloud Drive Mapper works directly over the internet using Microsoft Graph. Any plant, engineering office or field laptop with a standard internet connection reaches the same drive letters and the same files as head office. The VPN infrastructure that used to be necessary for cross-site file access is not needed for that any more.

04

Familiar drive letters for long-tenured engineering, production and quality staff

Manufacturing IT tends to be conservative for a good reason. Engineering, production and quality staff work under tight procedural discipline with software that has to just work. Retraining a workforce with decades of muscle memory on a new file-access model during production hours is a change-management programme most manufacturing IT teams cannot afford.

Cloud Drive Mapper looks like a file server to the user. The S: drive, the T: drive, the folder tree everyone has been using for years: still there, still exactly where it was. Engineers open drawings the way they always did. Quality opens SOPs the way they always did. Production opens work instructions the way they always did. The storage behind it has moved to Microsoft 365, but the working experience did not change.

Cloud Drive Mapper allows us to provide the simplicity of a traditional mapped drive while benefiting from the collaboration, scalability, and cloud capabilities of SharePoint.

Retiring on-site file servers without disrupting production

Manufacturers accumulate file servers over time: one at head office, often one per major plant, sometimes one at each engineering hub. Each is a hardware refresh cycle waiting to happen, a backup and DR chain to keep running, and (for plant-level servers) infrastructure sitting in a building with limited dedicated IT support. The blocker to retiring them has usually been that engineering and production staff have a decade or more of familiarity with the mapped-drive experience and cannot be asked to change how they work while lines are running.

Cloud Drive Mapper removes that blocker. Microsoft 365 becomes the working file storage for the whole estate, over the internet, from any plant. Plant-level and head-office file servers, their backup appliances and their DR chains can be decommissioned as they reach end of life. Every retired server is one less appliance in the refresh cycle, one less place from which engineering IP could go missing, and one less system for a small plant IT team to maintain.

06

Enterprise-scale SharePoint and Teams for engineering libraries and quality records

A mature manufacturer's engineering library can hold hundreds of thousands of drawings, revision histories, test records, calibration data and inspection reports. A plant-level quality documentation set can contain a decade of NCRs, CAPAs, audit records and process validation packs. Scale that would defeat the OneDrive sync client is routine for CDM.

Cloud Drive Mapper streams file content on demand rather than syncing a full local mirror, so the size of the library does not translate into local disk usage or bootstrapping time. Engineering teams can browse and update a SharePoint site holding a full engineering library the same way they browsed a network drive. See Overcoming the OneDrive 300,000 file sync limit for the specifics of how CDM handles enterprise-scale libraries.

07

Azure Virtual Desktop, Citrix and RDP estates for engineering and quality workstations

Many manufacturers run AVD or Citrix to deliver engineering workstations to remote engineers, to give quality inspectors consistent tools across plants, and to keep sensitive engineering IP off local endpoints. The OneDrive sync client is a persistent problem in these environments: profile bloat, non-persistent-session failures, and file access that behaves differently inside a VDI session than on a user's own laptop.

Cloud Drive Mapper is built for the way VDI actually works. On an AVD or Citrix host, CDM is user-based: multiple engineers sharing one host each see their own drive mappings inside their own session, exactly matching what they see on their laptop. Engineering CAD, PLM clients and quality applications running inside a VDI session get the same file behaviour they get on a physical desk.

08

Protection for engineering IP on laptops that travel to customer sites

Field engineers, quality auditors and installation staff travel with laptops. Those devices go to customer sites, spend nights in hotels, ride in vehicles and (occasionally) get lost. A file-sync model that leaves gigabytes of engineering drawings, quality records, supplier data and product IP on the local disk of every travelling laptop is a data-protection and IP-protection problem waiting to happen.

Cloud Drive Mapper does not create a persistent local cache of files. Content is streamed from Microsoft 365 to the device at the moment a user opens it, and released when they close it. A lost or stolen laptop does not contain a residual copy of engineering IP at rest. Incident response is simpler: if a device is compromised, there is no local drawing inventory or quality record to enumerate.

09

Copilot-ready SharePoint content for engineering knowledge and standard work

Microsoft 365 Copilot only sees content that lives in SharePoint, OneDrive and Teams. Engineering standards, design guidelines, lessons-learned libraries, standard operating procedures, quality manuals, supplier specifications: while these live on an on-premises file server or a network drive Copilot cannot reach, they are invisible to any AI-assisted workflow the business might build in the coming years.

Cloud Drive Mapper is what moves that content off the file server and into a place Copilot can reach, at a schedule where you retain full control over what becomes indexable when. For manufacturers with substantial engineering-knowledge and standard-work estates, that is a Copilot readiness gate CDM directly unblocks.

Frequently asked questions

Does Cloud Drive Mapper work with engineering CAD applications like AutoCAD, Bentley MicroStation and Vectorworks?

Yes. CDM presents Microsoft 365 storage as virtual network drives with real file paths, and engineering CAD applications treat those drives as ordinary Windows file storage. Drawings with external references (XREFs), assembly files with linked parts, and PLM-managed content behave the same way they would against a network share. Applications that require exclusive file locking on active drawings get proper SharePoint check-out behaviour through CDM.

Can Cloud Drive Mapper support shop-floor workstations with limited local IT?

Yes. CDM is a Windows client that installs onto individual PCs and can be centrally managed through Intune, Group Policy or your preferred endpoint-management tool. No plant-level file server is required. Once deployed, CDM is largely self-managing; the ongoing operational load is closer to that of the Microsoft 365 client than a traditional server-based file service. That matters at plants where the local IT footprint is small or shared with production support.

Does Cloud Drive Mapper handle multi-plant operations with different Microsoft 365 tenants per site or region?

Yes. CDM is tenant-agnostic. It authenticates against whichever Microsoft 365 tenant you point it at, including data-residency-specific variants. Multi-plant manufacturers with a single global tenant get one consistent file experience across every site; those running federated regional tenants can configure CDM to map drives per region. Data stays inside the boundary its tenant is designed for.

Can Cloud Drive Mapper handle very large engineering files (CAD assemblies, PLM archives, quality documentation)?

Yes. CDM streams file content on demand from Microsoft 365 rather than syncing a full local mirror. Opening a large CAD assembly downloads only what the application requests, and saves stream changed blocks back to SharePoint rather than re-uploading the whole file. Enterprise-scale libraries with hundreds of thousands of items work the same way as a small folder, because there is no per-file cataloguing overhead on the local endpoint.

Does IAM Cloud have access to our engineering IP or production data?

No. Cloud Drive Mapper operates purely with delegated permissions inside your Microsoft 365 tenant. IAM Cloud holds no credentials that would authenticate to your tenant. Only your own signed-in users can access your content through CDM, and only within their existing M365 permissions. If IAM Cloud's cloud systems were compromised, an attacker would not, as a result, gain access to your engineering drawings, quality records or production data.
