Cloud Drive Mapper for legal and professional services

INDUSTRY

Legal, accounting and professional-services firms are document businesses. Fee-earners spend their day inside Word, Excel, PDFs, precedent libraries, engagement folders, and the document management system that anchors matter or engagement work. Quick, reliable file access is not a nice-to-have; it is the practice. Cloud Drive Mapper brings real-time Microsoft 365 access to the whole non-DMS file estate, with automated file-locking, seamless versioning, the drag-and-drop-to-email workflow that fee-earners actually use, and a zero-access architecture that stands up to a privileged-information security review.

Real-time file access for a document-heavy workflow

The OneDrive sync client's eventual-consistency model produces the version-conflict question that document-heavy work cannot afford. A partner reviews a draft in the morning; an associate opens it in the afternoon and edits an older version because the sync had not caught up. Neither realises until the version goes back to the client with the wrong changes in it.

Cloud Drive Mapper works in real time. It talks directly to Microsoft Graph on demand, so files are always the current version regardless of where or when they were last edited. No local mirror to reconcile, no propagation lag, no "which version is the current one" moment mid-drafting.

02

Full compatibility with DMS, practice management and accounting software

The software layer in legal and professional services largely predates cloud-native design. Document management systems (iManage Work, NetDocuments, and equivalents) expect Windows drive letters or UNC paths. Practice management platforms, time-recording tools, accounting packages (Sage, QuickBooks, IRIS Elements, Thomson Reuters, CCH Axcess), tax software, audit tools, precedent libraries, court-filing utilities: the overwhelming majority are built around a real Windows file system.

Cloud Drive Mapper presents Microsoft 365 storage as virtual network drives with real file paths. Every application that expects a Z: drive gets one. Whatever the firm's software stack looks like, if it works with a Windows file server, it works with CDM. Existing DMS deployments continue to run as they always have; CDM handles the file estate outside the DMS.

03

Automated file-locking and seamless versioning

Two lawyers cannot safely edit the same draft brief at the same time. Two accountants cannot both be updating the same tax computation. Cloud Drive Mapper uses SharePoint's native check-out and check-in behaviour to enforce automated file-locking through the drive-letter experience. When one fee-earner has a document open, other users see the lock and cannot accidentally overwrite work in progress.

Version history is captured in SharePoint automatically, giving a real audit trail of who changed what, when, with the ability to roll back if a change needs to be reversed.

04

Drag-and-drop into email, the standard fee-earner workflow

Fee-earners live in Outlook. Documents get sent back and forth constantly: drafts to clients, engagement letters to counterparties, working papers between offices. The drag-and-drop-a-file-into-a-new-message workflow is deeply embedded in how the day runs.

Because Cloud Drive Mapper presents Microsoft 365 storage as a real Windows drive with real file paths, that workflow works exactly as it always has. Files can be dragged from the CDM drive into an Outlook message and sent as normal attachments. Nothing needs to change about the way the practice already works.

05

Enterprise-scale SharePoint and Teams for matter and engagement collaboration

Microsoft 365 has become the collaboration backbone in most legal and accounting firms: Teams for matter or engagement teams, SharePoint for departmental content and precedent libraries, OneDrive for individual working files.

A large matter with 100,000 documents in a SharePoint site can still browse and update via CDM. A precedent library covering thousands of standard documents across dozens of practice areas opens instantly. Scale that would defeat the sync client is unremarkable.

06

VDI and kiosk environments handled properly

Larger law firms and accounting practices, particularly those dealing with regulated or highly-sensitive content, often run Citrix, Azure Virtual Desktop or Omnissa Horizon estates so that data does not sit on the endpoint. Cloud Drive Mapper is built for these environments: non-persistent sessions, mandatory profiles, kiosk-style shared workstations, multi-session hosts. The OneDrive sync client is a persistent problem in VDI; CDM is not.

For firms already invested in VDI for security reasons, CDM makes Microsoft 365 file storage available inside that investment without a parallel redesign.

07

Zero-access architecture, vendor security for privileged information

Client privilege, professional secrecy and confidentiality obligations mean that the standard vendor-review question "what happens if the vendor is compromised" gets asked harder in legal and professional services than in almost any other sector. Answering it with "trust us" is not enough.

Cloud Drive Mapper's answer is that a compromise of IAM Cloud would not, as a result, expose your client files. CDM operates purely with delegated permissions. IAM Cloud holds no credentials that authenticate to your Microsoft 365 tenant. The mechanism a compromise would need to exploit does not exist in the system. This is a technical property, verifiable at the point of admin consent, not a marketing claim.

The Zero-access architecture guide sets it out in the detail a firm's information-security committee or risk partner will want to see. IAM Technology Group Ltd has also held ISO/IEC 27001 certification continuously since 2016; current certificate available on request.

08

Copilot-ready SharePoint content

Microsoft 365 Copilot only sees content that lives in SharePoint, OneDrive and Teams. As long as precedent libraries and non-DMS files live on an on-premises file server, Copilot cannot use them.

Cloud Drive Mapper is what moves the content into a place Copilot can reach. In a legal or accounting context, the oversharing-remediation work that Copilot readiness also requires matters especially, because inadvertent surfacing of privileged or confidential matter content is exactly the failure mode nobody can absorb.

09

Familiar file experience for fee-earners, support staff and IT

Fee-earner time is expensive. A programme that requires the practice's fee-earners to relearn file workflows during billable hours is a programme most managing partners will delay indefinitely. Cloud Drive Mapper looks like a file server to the user. The Z: drive that was there for years is still there. Folders, files, shortcuts and application integrations open the way they always have.

Behind the scenes, storage has moved to SharePoint. From the fee-earner's point of view, nothing changed. That is the whole point.

Frequently asked questions

Can Cloud Drive Mapper work alongside our document management system?

Yes. CDM handles the non-DMS parts of your file estate: precedent libraries, administrative content, HR, finance, marketing, project working files. Where a DMS such as iManage, NetDocuments or an equivalent is the primary tool for matter or engagement content, it continues to be. CDM and a DMS coexist naturally; some firms use both, some use CDM as the primary file layer while the DMS handles specific matter workflows.

Does Cloud Drive Mapper support file-locking to prevent simultaneous edits?

Yes. Cloud Drive Mapper enforces automated file-locking through SharePoint's native check-out and check-in behaviour. When one fee-earner opens a file, other users see the lock and cannot accidentally overwrite work in progress. This is the standard SharePoint model, exposed through the drive letter.

Does IAM Cloud have access to our privileged client files?

No. Cloud Drive Mapper operates purely with delegated permissions inside your Microsoft 365 tenant. IAM Cloud holds no credentials that would authenticate to your tenant. Only your own signed-in users can access your content through CDM, and only within their own existing M365 permissions. If IAM Cloud's cloud systems were compromised, an attacker would not, as a result, gain access to your client files. Full detail is in the Zero-access architecture guide.

Does Cloud Drive Mapper work on iPads that fee-earners use in courtrooms or on client visits?

No. CDM is a Windows product; it covers laptops, desktops, VDI sessions and kiosk-style workstations. Fee-earners on iPads or iPhones continue to access the same SharePoint and OneDrive content through Microsoft's own SharePoint and Teams mobile apps, which are well-optimised for those devices.

Can we still drag-and-drop documents into email attachments?

Yes. Because Cloud Drive Mapper presents Microsoft 365 storage as a real Windows drive with real file paths, the drag-and-drop-into-Outlook workflow that fee-earners rely on continues to work exactly as before. There is nothing different about the workflow from the user's point of view.
