Cloud Drive Mapper for energy and utilities

INDUSTRY

Energy and utilities operations are distributed by design. Head office plus a mix of generating stations, control rooms, substations, wind farms, pumping stations, wells, meter fleets and field crews. Every site depends on files being current, reachable and usable inside the asset management, engineering, GIS and compliance software the business runs on. Cloud Drive Mapper brings real-time Microsoft 365 file access to all of them, including the Azure Virtual Desktop and Citrix environments common in control-room settings, without a VPN concentrator per site or a file server behind each remote location.

Real-time file access from head office to every station, substation and field crew

Energy files change constantly. Work packs, permits to work, outage schedules, maintenance records, inspection reports, switching orders, standard operating procedures, incident reports. When a document updates in head office, a shift supervisor at a generating station, an engineer walking a substation, and a crew on a wind-farm access road all need to see the current version, not last night's cached copy. The OneDrive sync client's eventual-consistency model is a poor fit for operational environments where "which version is current" needs a deterministic answer.

Cloud Drive Mapper works in real time. It talks directly to Microsoft Graph on demand, so a procedure updated in head office at 10am is the version a field crew sees when they open the file at 10.02am, from any site on any internet-connected device. No local mirror to reconcile, no propagation lag, no arguments over which document is authoritative when a decision has to be made.

02

Full compatibility with the software energy actually uses

The software layer in an energy business is a mix of ages and specialisms. Engineering CAD (AutoCAD, MicroStation), GIS (ArcGIS, QGIS), asset-management platforms, document management systems, compliance and permitting software, maintenance-planning tools, and the general Microsoft 365 layer everything else runs against. Migration to SharePoint Online has stalled in many energy operators because the engineering and asset-management applications simply do not understand cloud-file semantics.

Cloud Drive Mapper presents Microsoft 365 storage as virtual network drives with real file paths. Every application that expects a Z: or an S: drive gets one. Drawing packages with external references, GIS applications with multi-file datasets, asset-management systems with exclusive-lock requirements, compliance tools with batch exports: if it works with a Windows file server, it works with CDM. Migration to Microsoft 365 stops being blocked by application remediation.

03

Multi-site operations without a VPN concentrator per station

Most energy IT teams have historically wired remote sites into head office through per-site VPN tunnels, or a central VPN concentrator sized for the peak of concurrent site connections. That infrastructure is expensive to run, awkward to scale as sites come on line and off, and a constant source of the "the VPN dropped again" tickets that eat both IT time and operations time.

Cloud Drive Mapper works directly over the internet using Microsoft Graph. Any site, control room or field laptop with a standard internet connection reaches the same drive letters and the same files as head office. The VPN infrastructure that used to be necessary for cross-site file access is not needed for that any more.

04

Familiar drive letters for long-tenured operations, engineering and field staff

Energy IT tends to be conservative for a good reason. Operations, engineering, maintenance and field staff work under tight procedural discipline with software that has to just work. Retraining a workforce with decades of muscle memory on a new file-access model during operating hours is a change-management programme most energy IT teams cannot afford.

Cloud Drive Mapper looks like a file server to the user. The S: drive, the T: drive, the folder tree everyone has been using for years: still there, still exactly where it was. Staff open documents the way they always did, save them the way they always did, and never need to know the storage behind it has moved to Microsoft 365. The help-desk queue does not spike; the migration is invisible where it needs to be invisible.

05

Retiring on-site file servers without changing how users work

Energy operators have a tendency to accumulate file servers: one at head office, often one per major site, sometimes one at each regional operations hub. Each is a hardware refresh cycle, a backup and DR chain, and (for the site-level servers) a piece of infrastructure sitting in a facility with no dedicated IT staff to care for it. The blocker to retiring them has usually been that engineering and operations staff have a decade or more of familiarity with the mapped-drive experience, and cannot be asked to change how they work while the business is running.

Cloud Drive Mapper removes that blocker. Microsoft 365 becomes the working file storage for the whole estate, over the internet, from any site. Site-level and head-office file servers, their backup appliances and their DR chains can be decommissioned as they reach end of life. Every retired server is one less appliance in the refresh cycle, one less place from which sensitive operational data could go missing, and one less system for a small IT team to maintain.

At Brunata, Cloud Drive Mapper has helped make our move from traditional file servers to SharePoint feel much more natural for our users. We can modernize our file storage while still giving people the familiar experience of working with mapped network drives. For us, that balance has been really valuable.

Compliance-conscious data handling: tenant-boundary, no persistent cache, zero third-party access

Energy and utilities operate under strict data-handling requirements, from asset-integrity records that need multi-year retention through to operationally sensitive documentation that must not be exposed to third parties. Any middleware in the file-access path has to satisfy the compliance owners as well as the IT team.

Cloud Drive Mapper's architecture is designed for this scrutiny. Content stays inside the customer's Microsoft 365 tenant boundary. There is no persistent local cache, so a lost tablet or stolen laptop does not contain a residual copy of operational data. IAM Cloud holds zero credentials that would authenticate to your tenant. All access is via delegated permissions with a full Microsoft 365 audit trail. See the zero-access architecture solution for the underlying technical detail suitable for compliance sign-off.

07

Azure Virtual Desktop, Citrix and RDP estates handled properly for control-room and back-office staff

Many energy operators run AVD or Citrix to give control room, engineering and back-office staff a consistent working environment across sites, and to keep sensitive operational data (asset drawings, incident reports, engineering models) off local endpoints. The OneDrive sync client is a persistent problem in these environments: profile bloat, non-persistent-session failures, and file access that behaves differently inside a VDI session than on a user's own laptop.

Cloud Drive Mapper is built for the way VDI actually works. On an AVD or Citrix host, CDM is user-based: multiple users sharing one host each see their own drive mappings inside their own session, exactly matching what they see on their laptop. That single behaviour has let energy operators consolidate RDP tiers that had been kept alive largely to serve file access, and stop the "leave the VDI session to find the file" workflow that had been costing operations time.

08

No persistent files on device, for tablets in the field and laptops on rigs

Energy field devices travel and get exposed. Tablets go out with maintenance crews, laptops sit in vehicles and on rigs, devices get carried into third-party sites and left behind at operations bases. Devices go missing and get physically damaged at rates that office-based industries do not experience. A file-sync model that leaves gigabytes of asset drawings, permits, procedures and incident data on the local disk of every device is a data-protection problem waiting to happen.

Cloud Drive Mapper does not create a persistent local cache of files. Content is streamed from Microsoft 365 to the device at the moment a user opens it, and released when they close it. A lost or stolen device does not contain a residual copy of operational data at rest. Incident response is simpler: if a device is compromised, there is no local file inventory to enumerate.

09

Copilot-ready SharePoint content for procedures, permits and safety documentation

Microsoft 365 Copilot only sees content that lives in SharePoint, OneDrive and Teams. Standard operating procedures, method statements, permits to work, safety policies, incident playbooks and asset documentation: while these live on an on-premises file server or a network drive Copilot cannot reach, they are invisible to any AI-assisted workflow the business might build in the coming years.

Cloud Drive Mapper is what moves that content off the file server and into a place Copilot can reach, at a schedule where you retain full control over what becomes indexable when. For energy operators with substantial procedure and compliance document estates, that is a Copilot readiness gate CDM directly unblocks.

Frequently asked questions

Does Cloud Drive Mapper work in remote sites with intermittent connectivity, such as wells, offshore platforms or wind farms?

Yes, whenever the device has internet connectivity. Cloud Drive Mapper works over any internet connection: cellular, satellite, VSAT, or standard fixed-line. It streams file content on demand rather than syncing a full local mirror, so bandwidth requirements are proportional to files actively opened rather than total library size. Sites with limited satellite bandwidth still benefit because CDM does not use the connection when files are not being accessed.

Does Cloud Drive Mapper work with the CAD, GIS and asset-management software that engineering teams depend on?

Yes. CDM presents Microsoft 365 storage as virtual network drives with real file paths. Engineering CAD (AutoCAD, MicroStation, Vectorworks), GIS (ArcGIS, QGIS), asset-management systems, EDMS/DMS platforms and compliance software all treat CDM drives as ordinary Windows file storage and work without modification. Applications with external references, drawing dependencies or exclusive-lock requirements behave the same way they would against a network share.

Can we deploy Cloud Drive Mapper across generating stations, substations and depots with no local IT staff?

Yes. Cloud Drive Mapper is a Windows client that installs onto individual PCs and is centrally managed through Intune, Group Policy or your preferred endpoint-management tool. No site-level server is required. Once deployed, CDM is largely self-managing; the ongoing operational load is closer to that of the Microsoft 365 client than a traditional server-based file service, which matters at unstaffed remote sites.

How does Cloud Drive Mapper fit compliance-conscious energy environments?

CDM's architecture is designed to align with regulated data-handling requirements. Content stays inside the customer's Microsoft 365 tenant boundary; there is no persistent local cache on the endpoint (which supports lost-device and physical-access threat models); IAM Cloud has zero access to customer data by design; and all access is via delegated permissions in the customer tenant with a full Microsoft 365 audit trail. See the Zero-access architecture solution for the underlying technical detail relevant to compliance sign-off.

Does IAM Cloud have access to our operational data?

No. Cloud Drive Mapper operates purely with delegated permissions inside your Microsoft 365 tenant. IAM Cloud holds no credentials that would authenticate to your tenant. Only your own signed-in users can access your content through CDM, and only within their own existing M365 permissions. If IAM Cloud's cloud systems were compromised, an attacker would not, as a result, gain access to your operational data.
