Important notice relating to a bug with PowerPoint 2411 (still in Office Preview) and webdav (i.e. CDM V2)

Please read this notification that relates to webdav/CDM V2, and a bug we have discovered in a preview version of Microsoft PowerPoint: https://www.iamcloudstatus.com/incidents/xdrjthl3ksxr

This new issue just affects PowerPoint, but it resembles a bug that was introduced into the Microsoft Office suite (including Word, Excel and PowerPoint) in July 2023, until Microsoft released a fix about a month later.

We have challenged Microsoft on this across several channels. Microsoft Support have reproduced the issue and have acknowledged it, and we are attempting to get traction and visibility with the Office/PowerPoint product group. But in the case that we cannot get Microsoft to resolve this before Office 2411 reaches the “Current” update channel, you may wish to have a plan as to how to mitigate. Some suggestions are given in the article linked above, including temporarily postponing the Office update if possible.

It should be noted that this issue does not affect CDM V3 (because it doesn’t use webdav), but we seriously urge against knee-jerk deployment of CDM V3 – we are currently handling the phased transition of our customers to CDM V3. This is about 15% complete so far. So while we can accelerate things from our side, it’s really important that customers plan a transition to V3 properly, ensuring the new V3 client is fully tested to meet their specific requirements before deploying it.

We don’t want the solution to cause more issues than the problem.

That is the main reason we recommend as a first resort to try to postpone the Office update, to give yourselves more time, or indeed to give Microsoft time to release a fix for it, which would be the ideal scenario since it would then allow V3 adoption to continue in a more orderly and unhurried fashion.
